Welcome to the main page for nickel collecting articles.  The first real nickel was the Shield Nickel, which was first minted back in 1866.  Up until that time, and still for a little while longer, the 5 cent coin was known as a half dime.  The half dime eventually went away and the nickel has stayed with us ever since.  It was called the nickel because of the metal used, nickel.  To the left, you will find links to articles about the various "nickels" that have been made, such as Sheild Nickels, Liberty Nickels, Buffalo Nckels and the Jefferson Nickels.
